South America
Poverty
Poverty is a significant issue in South America, with around 25% of the population living in poverty. Factors contributing to poverty in the region include income inequality, lack of access to education and healthcare, and a lack of economic opportunities. Indigenous and Afro-descendant communities are disproportionately affected by poverty, as well as rural populations and those living in informal settlements. The COVID-19 pandemic has also exacerbated poverty in the region, with many people losing their jobs and facing economic insecurity. Governments and organizations are implementing various poverty reduction programs, but more needs to be done to address the root causes of poverty in South America.
